In which Punkboard News rips off Buddyhead’s old schtick
Every so often we’ll present a post which goes over news, rumors, gossip and other little tidbits that we hear around town. Have anything to add? Leave it in the comments.
Is it possible that The San Diego Sports Club of all places could be the savior North Park needs? As you can see in this thread here, moogplayer requests a venue change for their show that was booked at Chasers and T-bone says no problem, its moved to the SDSC. We’ll be at that show, moogplayer’s bands are always great. City Beat also had a nice little write up about the changes over there.
As for the name and the décor, “the sports stuff is toast,” Cute said. They’re ripping down the sports memorabilia, and the new, sports-free name of the club will be announced at the official grand reopening scheduled for October.
Plans for the new place also include room for more avant-garde entertainment. “We’ll have more burlesque shows, belly dancers, even sword swallowers—we don’t care. We just want to make it a kick-ass venue and start doing our own thing and start utilizing the place to its fullest,” Cute said.
While we can honestly say we don’t go in for those burlesque shows (we equate the experience to something like the time we went to the movies and saw Monster’s Ball with our Grandmother - shit is awkward as hell) but some sort of variety show of the damned with bands could be fun. We’ve been told the old booker of that place, Tony Vee, is kind of a scum bag… which stopped people from going so they didn’t have to deal with him, but y’know thats just hearsay. But if our idle speculation turns out to be correct, we welcome our new Sports Club overlords.
We we’re at the Bar Pink last night, and we might have to issue a correction if how things were last night kept up. The bartenders still looked like they had just come back from a funeral (we still tip you guys though, fyi) but it was free, drinks were cheap, friends were there and the music was great, that’s all we’re looking for. The crowd looked kind of douche-y, but that’s not the bars fault. We did not stop by the Office to have a laugh though, we need to start parking on the other side of University. Hats off to Red Pony Clock and Los Angeles’ Jail Birds.
Maggie from Revenge Club, preaching the word:
1st: Shooters
2nd: Scolaris
3rd: Zombie Lounge (but that’s ok because it’s way better now)
4th: ChasersIs there some big bar conspiracy in North Park??
Yet Tobacco Rhodas still exists… why?! Can’t some yuppie buy that bar and charge $6 for a beer that takes 30 minutes to get?Now we have u-31and pink elephant… why don’t people like dive bars anymore? I thought the hipsters were all about upping their ghetto cred by hanging out at shady bars so people forget they are from upper middle class suburbia??
I can’t afford to go to these places! Nor do I want to feel like the outsider because I like to wear normal clothes.
What is happening to North Park??
Also, I dont know if anyone remembers north park deli, on 30th, but that place ruled! and now its some expensive fancy restaurant…. =( I think that hurts the worst…
Donny posted this on the space a few days ago. We hope it works, we really, really do. Donny is a treasure in this town.
It will reopen in a few months without us bartenders! all new staff! (fuck that)
So i say fuck Chasers and the new owners!!!
I’m trying hard to find a spot in north park to start a bar from scratch!!
I will need everyone’s support and bussiness at the new bar to make it work!
It will take a few months to get it done from the time i find the right spot!
Please dont give up! we can make a bar for us that will be almost as fun/good as Scolari’s if not better!!
Thanks
DonnyPS.
I promise, if i do start a bar i will not sell out!!!
U-31 is kicking out friend of the Punkboard’s Adam Gimble’s karaoke night to make room for Lady Dottie and the Diamonds. Sucks for Adam, hopefully he lands on his feet, and at some place that isn’t the Office, which is speculated in this blog here.
Corey states that Kadan doesn’t even want to have shows and they don’t even have a PA.
Davey simply, and cryptically says that there could be light at the end of the tunnel, we’d sure like to know what he means.
And congratulations to downtownpunkchick on the birth of her child, never was a parent more qualified.

tony vee was erratic and undependable, good riddance to that guy.
here’s an issue that needs to be addressed: is what’s happening with bars in north park an example of “gentrification” or does it merely represent a logical conclusion to a trend that started when young people started drinking at dive bars in north park.

Does music trivia require a live entertainment permit? If not then a switch to the Tower may be possible.

Gimble’s isn’t losing music trivia, he’s losing his Karaoke, whether or not one needs a cabaret license for that, we aren’t sure.

Just so everyone knows, I take it in the ass, and so does my father. That is all.

Everyone else knows that I cannot be expected to reasonably operate an Internet Web Site, so I posted the same thing twice, but it got edited because I like posting completely non-involved parties’ names on the InterWebberNets. Basically, go read this story about myself to figure out why I’m such a huge jerk.

Well the new owners of Sports Club used to own or manage a strip club and they look pretty scary. I’ve heard they know nothing about music and are leaving anything band related up to their booking agents. We’ll see what happens
